Yoo Jae-myung, animation director of The Legend of Korra, discusses Nickelodeons initial hesitancy to accept Mike and Bryans proposal of the show… and Korra.
“The sequel focuses on the incarnation of the new Avatar, Korra, as she tries to save a city called the Republic City.”
“So, Korra is a young girl , not a boy. Heroes and protagonists are usually men.”
“That actually became a problem.
Nickelodeon was reluctant to produce this animated series at first because the protagonist was a girl.
I guess you could say that Americans are more conservative than Koreans.
The production was suspended just because the protagonist was a girl.
To compare this situation to a movie production, it’s as if the lead actor has already been cast, but the production agency decides to stop the filming because they don’t approve of the actor.”

You know what?
I’m blaming this. This is why we can’t have nice things. This is why we don’t get the episodes. This is why we don’t get commercials or proper advertising or merchandise. This is still prevalent, they’re still bitter about this, and their utter incompetence and ineptitude when it comes to marketing and promotion could not have POSSIBLY been the genuine reasons for this show’s troubles in the ratings, so it must have been because she’s a girl, so you see “we were right”. That’s all.
This viewpoint will continue until I have a better explanation from the studios. I don’t care if the episodes are on their website when I post this message and jump over to the site, my stance will remain the same. I want an explanation. If you’re not going to give me the product I want to invest in, I want an explanation as to why I can’t have it.

I guess I need this if I ever want to do something other than reblog.
*runs and hides in corner*
Since a lot of people asked I present you a series of pictures depicting Gambit being extremely heterosexual
Yep. And then we have the all Gambit/Courier bromance. Please note that Jack is a shapeshifter and he’s normally very male.
Yes, totally platonic friendsh….
Guys please get a room!!!
Nah it doesn’t count because Courier looks like a woman even if Remy calls him Jacob?
Ok, right, but then after some very powerful flirting we have this beautiful Vargas moment.
And remember that time when Gambit thought that Jericho was trying to hit on him and instead of saying that he isn’t interested in men he pointed out that he was already in a relationship?
Let’s skip on something more recent… how about the whole Daken thing?
And then some very epic catfight follows.
Let’s conclude our survey by pointing out that there is no way for Gambit to be bisexual in canon… in a pig’s eye!
Reblogging because even I have to admire the shamelessness of hitting on a man who’s on his freakin’ honeymoon. And because Kyle.
I just love the way you’ve completely ignored a few crtical aspects of Gambit’s character. He’s a joker, a gambler, a charmer (Hypnotic Charm anyone?), he annoys people, he’s a survivor, and he appears to take the saying “if you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em, then beat ‘em” to heart.
In that first scene with Brother Marcelo, Gambit had just recieved medical treatment by a guy who probably wasn’t qualified in anything more than First Aid. Quite frankly, as someone who’s rather squeamish about medical stuff, I’d probably prefer being “kissed” too.
Gambit never flirted with Courier in his male body, unless saying things like “I liked you better when you were a woman” counts. You know, because the first time Gambit met Courier, he was in a female body wearing a fur bikini (You want to read Wizard 1/2 for that one).
Just before Vargas and Gambit conversed over wine, Gambit got caught attempting to steal from Vargas. Gambit was being his charming self because, get this, he didn’t want to be killed, or worse. Because y’know, Gambit does that. Ever read Uncanny X-Men #266? From issue 1 Gambit was charming his way out of sticky situations. It’s pretty much the first thing he does when confronted: turns on the charm.
Gambit is well aware that he’s an attractive guy. I’m sure that he’s been hit on by men before, and since he had no way of knowing that Jericho was a praciting psychologist when he tried to give Gambit his number for “personal reasons” I don’t find it at all unreasonable that Gambit may have felt he was being hit on. Gambit is way too much of a charmer to reject someone by saying “no homo”, though, likewise, as someone in a relationship he’s doing the responsible thing and admitting he’s seeing someone. So here’s the interesting part, what he actually says is: “Oh…No offence Jericho. I’m flattered, but there’s a girl I’m see—” and is cut off. So, Gambit doesn’t simply say that he’s in a relationship, he specifically points out that he’s seeing a girl.
For Daken we come back to Gambit, the charmer, the survivor, the guy who changes sides in the middle of a battle. There is absolutely no doubt in my mind whatsoever that if a guy starts flirting with Gambit in the middle of a fight (or in the precurser to one) that Gambit is going to flirt back if he thinks it’ll buy him an advantage. In fact that’s something else Gambit has in common with Rogue: They’ll kiss people in the middle of battle. It would not surprise me in the slightest if one day Gambit did kiss another man in the middle of a fight. Ever read Gambit series 3 #10? Gambit planted a charged card in Andreas von Struckers’ back pocket. I don’t have a scan for this one but he makes some comment about how Andreas’ wasn’t his first choice of butt to touch (The other ‘main’ characters at that party were Andrea von Strucker and the adorable Sekhmet). Granted, as a pickpocket, Gambit probably has touched many butts in his time and doesn’t think much of it beyond some butts being nicer to touch than others ;) Oh wait, I do have this scan of Gambit and Andreas from that issue:
Ehehe, it makes me giggle every time. Incidentally, if I recall correctly, I think that was the same panel when Gambit planted the time-delayed charged card on him.
And as for hitting on the newly married Kyle: again, joker, charmer, gambler. This is the guy who proposed to Courier in a female body knowing full well that he would be rejected, just to be annoying.
If you want to believe that Gambit is bisexual, go right ahead, I’m not going to tell you you’re wrong. What I am telling you, though, is that this is insufficient evidence to convince me.
OP here. I happen to own all the issues you have referred in your reply and I assure you that I’m probably the biggest Gambit’s fangirl you’ll ever find in Piedmont so I’m not trying to mischaracterize the character or have forgotten fundamental traits of his personality.
Now, I appreciate that for once I’m talking to someone who knows the character, but you completely failed to get my point which is not “conclusive proof”, but that in cannon there is enough material for speculation.
As you can read in my original post I explicitly say: “Let’s conclude our survey by pointing out that there is no way for Gambit to be bisexual in canon… in a pig’s eye!”
The comment is meant to be humorous and to imply that, yes, in the comics there IS material for speculation.
If you wander through the web, you’ll find that Remy and Storm’s possible bisexuality is an open topic. Two years ago I made a post similar to yours in my personal blog (not the tumblr one) to debunk Gambit’s presumed bisexuality. Now I changed approach, not only because I’m hungry for representation, but because in the end there IS material in the comics.
Yes, Gambit is a joker, a charmer and a trickster in many ways, but let me ask you a question: if these comments of his where directed to a woman instead of a man, would the two of us be here discussing the presence of sexual undertones?
Food for thought.
